Resources for Storytellers, Story Listeners, and Event Coordinators

The International Storytelling Center  produces the annual National Storytelling Festival in Jonesborough, TN.
promotes the power of storytelling and ways it can help to build a better world. Founded in 1975 as the
National Storytelling Association, the center's year-round work supports the power of storytelling and ways it
can help to build a better world.

The National Storytelling Network  brings together and nurtures individuals and organizations that use the
power of storytelling in all its forms. It produces an annual conference; publishes a bimonthly magazine,
annual directory, books and CDs; funds grants; provides advocacy ideas and much more. Special interest
groups (SIGs) bring together people with common interests, such as youth storytelling, event organizers,
storytelling in organizations, and others.

Story-Lovers SOS: Searching Out Stories  is an infinitely valuable story bones collection. If you need just the
right tale for just the right occasion, Jackie Baldwin makes it possible. She collects and categorizes stories by
subject, by audience characteristics, or by story type. (She also makes delightful gifts!)

Creative Proverbs from Around the World  permits you to search 12,000 proverbs from 300 countries and
cultures, or browse 1,500 proverbs from 100 countries and cultures. How many ways can you convey the idea
that "A stitch in time saves nine"?

The Story Connection  is a fabulous site - for teachers and parents, with online resources, book
recommendations, activities for children, and a monthly newsletter packed with announcements and
opportunities - and for professional storytellers looking for tips on managing their businesses and careers.

Story Arts Online is a gold mine for teachers! Heather Forest suggests lesson plans and activities, gives you
the names and bones of stories for students to practice, recommends books, provides online articles, and
generously offers other great ideas for storytelling in the classroom.

Storyteller.net  is an electronic magazine maintained by Arizona storyteller K. Sean Buvala. You'll find articles,
checklists, audio files, advice, stories, book reviews, and other information.

STORYTELL is an international email discussion list about storytelling. Everyone interested in storytelling is
invited to participate: professional and amateur storytellers, people concerned with the history of storytelling,
people who enjoy listening to stories, and those who speculate about the place of storytelling in the 21st
century. This international list has more than 500 subscribers worldwide and generates 40 to 80 email
messages each day. Visit the STORYTELL Web site <http://www.twu.edu/cope/slis/storytell.htm> for more
information about the list and how to subscribe.

The Storytelling Ring is a "ring" of Web sites that feature storytelling resources, organizations, events, and the
tellers themselves. You can travel the "ring" to visit one site after another, eventually ending back where you
started. A fun way to visit neighbors in our global community!

Western Washington University instructor Rosemary Scott Vohs
<http://www.ac.wwu.edu/~rvohs/> maintains
a stunning online resource about Pacific Northwest resources and events. You'll be amazed at the list of
meetings, classes, festivals and links! Wow, Rosemary! You go, girl!

Young Audiences of Oregon and SW Washington is an arts-in-education organization supporting teachers
and artists. It puts artists (that includes storytellers!) in the schools, sponsors professional development
workshops for artists and teachers, and supports other programs that bring together the arts and young
people.
