| (503) 238-1203 annepenstories@aol.com Anne Penfound is a teller of long, short and tall tales. She practices the art of spinning of a good yarn whether it’s spun from ancient oral tradition or an anecdote that occurred yesterday. |

Anne was born in Guildford, Surrey, on the River Wey, south of London. She grew up in an era when the milkman’s delivery came by horse and cart. Garage Sales and Goodwill were unheard of. Instead she recalls the Rag and Bone man with his distinctive cry, “Rag ‘n bone, rag ‘n bone!” and his jumble of old clothes, pots, pans and cast-off treasure. She learned rhymes from centuries long gone and skipped rope to chants her grandmother knew. She fell asleep to tales of fairy folk. Anne has coaxed the joy of learning through stories for children in the outdoor classroom of Leach Botanical Garden. She’s traveled to Seattle’s Northwest Folklife Festival to share her craft. She tells Japanese folktales in schools through the Japan on the Road Program and is a performance artist for Young Audiences programs in Oregon and Southwest Washington. She recounts myth, legend and lore for nature fairs, 4-H programs, and library and park events. She spends storytelling evenings at Kennedy School and the Charlotte A. Cavatica Learning Center with the Portland Storytellers Guild. Anne Penfound believes stories live within us. With each telling they breathe new life. They change with listener response, mood and moment. Whether it’s familiar or newly discovered, the story and the telling blend into a singular experience of humor, wisdom and something shared between young and old – tales of times long past renewed for the present. |
